The Madras High Court has sharply criticized the Chennai Police Commissioner for the mishandling of the Anna University rape case, specifically accusing the commissioner of allowing the First Information Report (FIR) to be leaked to the media. The court has expressed strong concerns about the potential prejudicing of the investigation and the victim’s safety, particularly in light of sensitive details being made public before the investigation was complete.

The case revolves around a sexual assault incident involving a student of Anna University in Chennai, which came to light earlier this week. The victim, a female student, reportedly filed a complaint alleging that she was assaulted by a fellow student. The police initially took action by registering an FIR, but within hours, the document surfaced online, sparking outrage and further complicating the case.

The Madras High Court, in its judgment, emphasized the importance of protecting the privacy of victims and ensuring that such details are not leaked during the early stages of an investigation. The court made it clear that the leak had hindered the case and potentially violated the victim’s rights. The judges also stated that the police must be held accountable for any lapses in protocol that allowed the FIR to be made public.

To ensure a fair investigation and prevent further mishandling of the case, the court has ordered the formation of an all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take over the investigation. This SIT will be tasked with conducting a thorough and unbiased inquiry, with a specific focus on protecting the rights of the victim and preventing any further media leaks.

The formation of an all-women SIT is seen as a significant step in addressing the sensitivity of sexual assault cases and ensuring that the investigation is carried out by officers who are empathetic and focused on the victim’s welfare. The SIT will be led by senior female officers with expertise in handling sexual assault cases.
