In Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, an FIR was filed against journalists Zakir Ali Tyagi and Waseem Ali Tyagi, along with three others, for allegedly provoking communal unrest through social media posts about the death of Feroz Qureshi, a scrap worker. The incident occurred in Jalalabad town where Qureshi was reportedly beaten to death over theft allegations. Zakir Ali Tyagi & Waseem Ali Tyagi

The FIR also targeted Thana Bhawan MLA Ashraf Ali Khan for sharing information about the incident. According to Shamli police, the journalists’ tweets about the incident misrepresented the facts, potentially inciting communal disharmony. The police invoked sections aimed at preventing enmity between different groups and statements causing public mischief. They contend that Qureshi’s death was not linked to lynching, citing a post-mortem report that indicated he had entered the accused’s house intoxicated.
