The Tamil Nadu Police are taking proactive steps following a significant gold smuggling incident at Chennai airport. They intend to request a comprehensive report from Customs, focusing on the smuggling of 267 kg of gold worth ₹167 crore over 60 days. This incident has sparked concerns about the vulnerability of established channels that could potentially be exploited for smuggling drugs and other contraband into the state.
A senior police official has underscored the threat posed by international syndicates adept at circumventing security measures. Speaking anonymously to The Hindu, the official stressed the urgency of investigating how the perpetrators managed to evade detection during the smuggling operation. This scrutiny aims to enhance airport security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future and safeguard against illicit activities impacting Tamil Nadu’s security and stability.
