The Sikkim government has heightened its efforts to monitor illegal immigrants and workers, making it mandatory for all outsiders to register in the state. This decision addresses concerns about the influx of immigrants potentially overwhelming the local population and aims to discourage individuals with criminal backgrounds from settling in the state. Notably, Sikkim has experienced a negative decadal population growth, decreasing from 6.82 lakh in 2011 to 6.38 lakh in 2023.
