A police station located in Darwin’s Central Business District, which also served as a temporary holding facility for prisoners, has sustained significant damage after an early-morning incident on January 6, 2025. The 27-year-old man arrested in connection with this attack is suspected of intentionally causing the damage.

Authorities were forced to close the police station, which had been overburdened with housing excess prisoners due to a record-high prison population in the Northern Territory. The region’s corrections facilities are experiencing a surge, with an increase of 74% in police-prison numbers over just seven weeks. As a result of the station’s closure, local residents are being directed to use other nearby police stations or file reports via phone or online.
