The picturesque town of Kullu, often celebrated for its natural beauty and tourism, has also seen a disturbing rise in drug-related cases this year. According to official records, 222 cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, highlighting the growing challenge of drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
The cases span various offenses, including smuggling of contraband, cultivation of cannabis, and possession of narcotic substances. Kullu, being a transit hub for drug trade due to its proximity to major highways and remote valleys, remains a hotspot for such activities.
Authorities have seized significant quantities of contraband this year, including hashish, opium, and synthetic drugs. The value of these drugs in the international market runs into several crores, underlining the scale of the issue.
In response to the surge in cases, local police and anti-narcotics units have intensified their operations. Checkpoints have been established on major routes, and surveillance has been increased in remote areas known for illicit cannabis cultivation.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Kullu stated, “Our priority is to break the supply chain and bring the perpetrators to justice. We have strengthened our intelligence network and are working closely with other agencies.”
The rising number of NDPS cases poses a significant threat to the youth and local communities. Awareness campaigns have been launched to educate residents about the dangers of drug abuse and the legal consequences of participating in drug-related activities.
Local NGOs and rehabilitation centers are also stepping in to support those battling addiction, emphasizing the need for a multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue.
Authorities have pledged to continue their crackdown on drug networks in the coming year. Plans include adopting advanced surveillance technology, increasing the manpower of anti-narcotics units, and fostering community participation to combat the menace effectively.
