Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Shanta Kumar has raised serious concerns over the rising drug abuse and trafficking in the state, warning that the situation is worsening like Punjab. He urged state agencies, especially the police, to take strict action before the crisis spirals out of control.
He highlighted that while earlier contraband like charas was commonly seized in raids, now synthetic drugs like Chitta are rapidly spreading, making them easily available. This, he said, is a matter of grave concern.
In a press statement, Shanta Kumar pointed out that despite recent police seizures of large drug consignments and arrests, law enforcement seems to be losing control over traffickers. He expressed concern that unemployed youth and schoolchildren are the worst victims of this menace.
Shanta Kumar further emphasised that drug trafficking is taking a heavy toll on human lives. He warned that traffickers are freely transporting narcotics across the state, ensuring easy access for vulnerable sections of society. The worst-affected areas, he noted, are the border districts, where drug movement remains unchecked.
