Tensions escalated in Porvorim, North Goa, following the partial dismantling of a temple’s outer boundary wall to facilitate the relocation of a 200-year-old banyan tree for the NH-66 highway expansion. Local residents protested the move, leading to the detention of two individuals by the police as a precautionary measure. The High Court of Bombay at Goa had previously granted permission to the Public Works Department and its contractor to proceed with the tree’s relocation.
