Tensions have escalated in Assam’s Baksa district as hundreds of residents took to the streets in protest against an alleged incident of police brutality. The controversy erupted after reports surfaced that a local youth was severely beaten while in police custody, sparking widespread anger and condemnation from the community.
Eyewitnesses and family members of the victim claim that the young man, who was detained for questioning regarding a minor dispute, was subjected to physical assault by officers. He was later admitted to a local hospital with severe injuries, fueling suspicions of custodial torture. Protesters gathered in large numbers outside the district police station, demanding justice and strict action against the responsible officers.
Amid mounting pressure, local leaders and activists have called for an independent investigation into the matter. “We will not tolerate such inhumane treatment of our people. Those responsible must be held accountable,” said one protestor while holding banners that read “Justice for the victim” and “Stop police brutality.”
The district administration has assured that an inquiry will be conducted, and the police department has been urged to take appropriate action. However, tensions remain high, with locals warning of intensified protests if justice is delayed.
