A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Chandigarh has sentenced Himachal Pradesh Inspector General of Police Zahur Haider Zaidi and seven other police personnel to life imprisonment for their involvement in the custodial death of Suraj, an accused in the 2017 rape and murder case of a 16-year-old schoolgirl in Shimla’s Kotkhai area.

The convicted officers were found guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 302 (murder), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession), 348 (wrongful confinement), and 195 (giving false evidence). The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on each convict.
