Ambergris, a rare substance derived from sperm whales, has once again emerged in a high-profile smuggling case. Maharashtra Police apprehended a man in Thane carrying 1.3 kg of ambergris, valued at Rs 5 crore. Ambergris, often referred to as “floating gold,” is prized for its use in luxury perfumes. The accused was intercepted based on a tip-off and taken into custody, where he revealed his plans to sell the contraband. Authorities are now investigating the supply chain, as smuggling ambergris remains illegal under wildlife protection laws.
This case highlights the ongoing illegal wildlife trade in India and the vigilance of Maharashtra Police in curbing such crimes. Efforts to create awareness about the endangered species associated with ambergris and strict law enforcement are crucial to reducing such incidents.
