On January 19, 2025, the Assam Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his controversial statement referring to India as a “Union of States” rather than a nation. The complaint alleges that Gandhi’s remarks could incite disaffection towards the sovereignty and integrity of India.
The FIR was filed under sections pertaining to sedition and promoting enmity between different groups. The Assam Police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
