On January 15, 2025, the Himachal Pradesh government made a significant move in the fight against rising drug trafficking and organized crime by forming a Special Task Force (STF). This action is in response to the surge in drug-related crimes, especially under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, with a sharp increase in heroin cases between 2019 and 2023. The STF will consist of senior police officials and a commando unit specially trained to conduct anti-narcotics operations, aiming to disrupt the drug trade within the state.
The STF’s formation is seen as a proactive step to combat organized crime, as it will focus on high-priority areas plagued by illegal drug networks. By deploying skilled personnel, the STF hopes to dismantle trafficking operations and reduce the supply of narcotics, improving public safety and restoring order. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to tackling the complex issues surrounding drug abuse and organized criminal activities in the region.
