In a significant drug bust on January 13, 2025, the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) traffic police, in collaboration with the Nirjuli police, intercepted a scooter near Bage Tinali for a routine traffic violation.
The rider, an unidentified male, fled the scene upon being asked to open the scooter’s underseat storage. Upon inspection of the abandoned vehicle, authorities discovered a bag containing 57 plastic vials, each weighing 75.33 grams, and a plastic pouch with 25.6 grams of suspected heroin, along with three empty syringes. The total estimated value of the seized contraband is approximately ₹2 lakh in the local market.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the heroin was sourced from outside the state and intended for distribution among the youth in the ICR, posing a significant threat to public health and safety. The police have initiated legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and are actively working to apprehend the absconding rider. Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Mihin Gambo commended the swift action of the traffic and Nirjuli police, highlighting the importance of such operations in curbing drug-related offenses in the region.
