In an effort to enhance road safety, Puducherry police began enforcing the compulsory helmet rule for all two-wheeler riders on January 12, 2025. As part of this initiative, violators will face a fine of ₹1,000. The implementation is aimed at reducing the number of head injuries and fatalities in the region, especially during the Pongal festival season, when traffic congestion increases. The rule applies to both riders and pillion passengers.

Puducherry has seen a significant rise in two-wheeler accidents in recent years, many of which have resulted in severe injuries. By making helmets mandatory, the police hope to curb the fatality rate and promote safer riding habits. Local authorities have already initiated awareness campaigns, informing the public about the new rule and its importance for road safety.
