The Sikkim Police was established in 1897 when Sikkim was a kingdom under the Chogyal monarchy. Prior to its integration into India in 1975, the Sikkim Police operated under the monarchy’s governance. After becoming a part of India, the police force was reorganized to align with Indian law enforcement structures. The state’s peaceful nature and small population meant that the Sikkim Police had a relatively low crime rate to deal with compared to other regions, but they still faced challenges with border security, especially given the state’s proximity to Nepal, Bhutan, and China.

Over time, Sikkim Police modernized their operations, focusing on countering emerging security challenges and providing law enforcement in the state’s growing urban and tourist centers. The force has a reputation for strong community policing and is committed to improving its operational capabilities.
