January 8, 2025, marked the fifth anniversary of the tragic Madhabbari firing incident, which led the Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) to observe a Black Day in Tripura. The incident, which occurred on January 8, 2019, involved police allegedly opening fire on peaceful anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protesters in Madhabbari, leading to several injuries. On this somber day, TSF activists gathered at Khumulwng, commemorating the event by marching to the very site of the firing, demanding justice and accountability for those responsible for the violence.

The Madhabbari incident remains a contentious issue in Tripura, symbolizing the broader resistance to the CAA and the state’s handling of dissent. The TSF’s Black Day observance aimed not only to remember the lives affected but also to press the government for answers regarding the actions of the police that day. The rally highlighted the ongoing struggle for justice and the growing discontent with the state’s law enforcement agencies. For many in Tripura, the incident is still fresh in memory, and their calls for accountability continue to resonate five years later.
