A major rescue operation is underway in the coal mine located in Tin Kilo under the jurisdiction of Umrangso police station. An Army relief task force has been deployed to rescue at least 13 miners who have been trapped after Coal Mine No. 19 flooded early on Monday morning.

The Flood and Immediate Response

The mine, which is one of the largest in the region, suffered a sudden flood around dawn on January 6, 2025, catching the miners by surprise. Rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the site, and the Assam Police, along with Army personnel, have been working tirelessly to locate and evacuate the stranded miners.

The flood occurred due to a sudden rise in water levels, which overwhelmed the mine’s drainage system, trapping workers inside. Emergency services arrived promptly, but rescue efforts have been hampered by the challenging terrain and unstable mine structures.

Army’s Role in the Operation

The Army’s relief task force, consisting of engineers and rescue personnel, is providing vital support by setting up temporary access routes and using specialized equipment to retrieve the trapped individuals safely. “We are focusing on ensuring that no further harm comes to those trapped. The rescue operation is our highest priority,” stated Major Ravi Kumar, spokesperson for the Army task force.

Progress and Challenges

While the situation remains tense, rescuers have made significant progress in reaching the miners. Authorities have stated that they are hopeful of rescuing the trapped individuals in the coming hours, but the risk of further flooding and structural collapses in the mine remains a major concern.

The police have also set up a safety cordon around the site to prevent unauthorized access and ensure the safety of rescue personnel.

Community and Official Support

Local residents have been rallying to support the victims and their families. The District Magistrate of Umrangso has assured the public that every effort is being made to secure the safe return of the miners. “We are committed to ensuring the welfare of the affected families and workers,” the District Magistrate commented.

 Ongoing Efforts

While the flood has posed serious challenges, the rescue operation continues around the clock. The Army, police, and emergency services are working in unison to bring the trapped miners to safety, with hopes high that they will be rescued without further loss of life.
