In a strategic move to combat the growing menace of cross-border drug trafficking, the Meghalaya Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks operating in the region. This initiative follows a significant breakthrough on January 1, 2025, when three individuals—Ekramul Hussain (30), Monjuwara Begum (32), and Nihar Begum (30)—were arrested in Byrnihat, a town located in the Ri-Bhoi district near the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The arrests were made during a targeted operation in which authorities seized approximately 254.16 grams of suspected heroin, a substance valued at several lakhs. Along with the heroin, police also confiscated ₹58,380 in cash and four mobile phones. The seizure is believed to be part of a much larger drug trafficking operation, with links to smuggling routes that extend across the international border.
The formation of the SIT is a crucial step in the state’s battle against drug trafficking. The team will work to track the origins of the drugs, identify key players in the trafficking network, and disrupt the flow of illicit substances into the state. Furthermore, the SIT will also focus on implementing preventive detention proposals under the provisions of the PITNDPS Act, 1988, which is aimed at curbing the influence of drug lords and their network in Meghalaya.
Authorities have expressed their determination to intensify efforts against the rising drug trade, which has been a growing concern in the state. Meghalaya, which shares a porous border with Bangladesh, has seen a rise in the smuggling of illicit substances, including heroin and methamphetamine. The arrest and the formation of the SIT reflect the state’s commitment to safeguarding the community from the social and economic harm caused by drugs.
The Meghalaya Police are calling on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking. As investigations continue, law enforcement agencies are hopeful that this operation will disrupt the illegal networks and bring those responsible to justice.
