In a major crackdown, authorities seized spurious drugs worth approximately ₹6.6 crore from a wholesale pharmaceutical firm in Kolkata. The operation, led by the Kolkata Police and drug control officials, unearthed a large stockpile of counterfeit medicines intended for distribution across various regions.
Acting on a tip-off, officials raided the premises of a wholesale drug supplier in Kolkata’s Burrabazar area. The investigation revealed that the firm was storing a variety of fake medicines, including antibiotics and critical-care drugs, which failed to meet quality standards. The spurious drugs were packaged in counterfeit labels of well-known pharmaceutical brands, posing a serious threat to public health.
The seizure highlights the alarming prevalence of counterfeit drugs in India, which not only endangers patients but also undermines trust in the healthcare system. Authorities have sealed the premises and are tracing the supply chain to identify other parties involved. Cases have been registered against the firm’s operators under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with further investigations underway.
This operation serves as a reminder of the urgent need for stricter regulations and consumer vigilance to combat the circulation of counterfeit medicines.
