In a significant crackdown, Manipur Police have arrested eight individuals involved in a series of attacks on police stations and the homes of elected officials. These arrests are linked to incidents that occurred amid ongoing ethnic tensions in the region. The individuals are accused of property damage, arson, and violence against law enforcement, as well as attempts to disrupt the law and order of the state.

Manipur Police have made key arrests in connection with violent attacks on police stations and the residences of elected officials, actions that have escalated the ethnic strife in the region. Eight individuals, including members of local insurgent groups, were taken into custody for their involvement in these unlawful acts.

The first arrest occurred on November 28, when Chongtham Thoicha, alias Romeo Meitei, was apprehended from Kiyam Mamang Leikai under the Patsoi Police Station in Imphal West District. Meitei was involved in the destruction and arson of property belonging to elected officials on November 16. This attack was part of a larger series of violent acts spurred by ethnic tensions between different communities in the state.

A more violent attack occurred on November 27, when seven individuals were arrested for their involvement in an assault on Kakching Police Station. During this attack, police personnel, who were performing their lawful duties, were injured as the assailants demanded the release of four individuals previously arrested on November 16 for their role in vandalizing elected officials’ properties.

The Kakching Police Station attack further exacerbated the situation, highlighting the lengths to which some groups are willing to go to challenge the state’s authority. Two police officers were injured during the confrontation, and the property at the police station was significantly damaged. The arrests of these individuals have brought some relief to the authorities, who are working tirelessly to restore peace and order in the region.

In addition to these arrests, the Manipur government has intensified its efforts against extortion in the valley districts. Recently, five individuals with ties to insurgent groups, including PREPAK (PRO), UNLF, and KCP (PWG), were arrested. One of the suspects was actively involved in extorting money from local businesses in Imphal.

The police’s swift action reflects their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and restoring law and order in the face of growing challenges posed by ethnic and militant groups. The ongoing crackdown on extortion and violent activities signals the government’s determination to curb insurgency and maintain peace in Manipur.
