Police in West Bengal have made a second arrest related to the public flogging incident in Uttar Dinajpur district. Amirul Islam, also known as Badhua, was apprehended by officers from Islampur police station near the state’s border with Bangladesh on Wednesday morning. This arrest follows the earlier detention of Tajmul Islam, alias ‘JCB’, who was seen in a viral video caning a couple accused of having an extra-marital affair in Chopra’s Ghirnar village.
According to police sources, Amirul Islam was identified from the video footage standing alongside Tajmul during the incident. Authorities have pledged to identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the case. The incident, which occurred last Friday and was captured on video, prompted widespread public outrage, leading to a suo motu case being registered by the police on Sunday. The couple allegedly faced the brutal punishment following a verdict by a local kangaroo court.
