Three new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam—recently came into effect nationwide on July 1, marking a significant overhaul of India’s criminal justice system. The reforms include provisions such as Zero FIR, online complaint registration, and SMS-based summonses, aiming to modernize and streamline judicial processes while phasing out colonial-era laws. Various states have undertaken extensive preparations to implement these laws.
In Delhi, for instance, the police conducted thorough training sessions and trial runs of the new procedures. Bihar and Tripura have similarly focused on training and awareness programs, ensuring readiness across law enforcement agencies. Despite challenges like language barriers in Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, preparations are underway nationwide to ensure a smooth transition to these progressive legislative changes.
